"The most accurate chart of the meaning of history is the set of tracks made by a drunken fly with feet wet with ink, staggering across a piece of white paper. They lead nowhere and reflect no pattern of meaning" - someone
...but this is only the small picture! Any small motion, when viewed from appreciable distance, displays a discernable pattern. It's like looking too closely at a computer screen and seeing nothing but dots. Or it's like the music of Webern, minimalistic and apparently random, but in actuality built carefully to follow a pattern that appears random. There is nothing that is truly random -- and that's not just a statement of faith, but a statement of mathmatical analysis, as well.
Actually, this was taken from the beginning of a sermon that then went on to say that we as Christians know that there is a focus of history and a point, but I thought this quote was really funny.
Also, surprised you didn't comment on the post before..isn't that crazy about B flat?
That was pretty cool -- I just wasn't very inspired that day. I did e-mail the article to a couple friends, though. Like with physics, there are some many intricacies and points of connection in music that we haven't even imagined.
